How many of us are actively aware on a daily basis of the importance of refrigeration? From the frozen fruit, we use in the smoothies of our early morning customers, to the leftover sauces and marinades we only need the next day. Having the luxury to be able to store these products safely is often not something we take the time to stop and appreciate. But refrigeration plays a major role in keeping our food safe and avoiding unnecessary waste. And this year that is also the focus of World Refrigeration Day.
Every year on the 26th of June World Refrigeration Day focuses on a different theme in the refrigeration, air-conditioning, and heat pump sector to raise awareness about how these industries play a role in today’s society and the role they play in the sustainability of our future. This year’s Cooling Keeps Food Fresh campaign highlights how refrigeration keeps our food safe, increases a nutritious diet, helps to reduce food waste, and therefore contributes to protecting our environment.
“Hoshizaki is committed to creating a sustainable future serviced by pioneering, energy-efficient equipment. Raising awareness and supporting critical issues affecting the food service sector.”
And again this year, Hoshizaki supports the event by being one of the sponsors. But for many years Hoshizaki has already been supporting leading restaurants and kitchens around the world with their sustainable refrigeration options.
And now within this sector restaurants, chefs, producers, and influencers have come together to support and spread a bigger cause with Chefs4Planet. This coalition is dedicated to fighting food waste, protecting the world’s biodiversity and environment, and to climate action. A great addition to the board for this year’s World Refrigeration Day. During this event, they will share recipes and ideas with consumers to explain how to effectively use their cooling solutions and make food last longer.
When we asked Stuart Kayes from Hoshizaki Europe BV how this year’s theme aligns with Hoshizaki’s vision he mentioned: “Hoshizaki is committed to creating a sustainable future serviced by pioneering, energy-efficient equipment. Raising awareness and supporting critical issues affecting the food service sector.”
He followed by saying: “World Refrigeration Day provides an opportunity to celebrate and educate the importance of refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat-pump technologies, and the significant role they have in modern life and society.” Click here to see our sustainable refrigeration options
So what are some benefits of refrigeration?
Refrigeration is key when it comes to keeping food fresh. Cold temperatures slow down the growth of bad bacteria that spoil food. Not only does this reduce the risk of getting sick from food that is spoiled we also have more time to use these food items. Which means less food in the bin.
Also, freezing produce such as very ripe fruit after picking locks in more nutrients, giving us more nutritious meals. But again this option avoids the loss of food because we are able to preserve produce properly so it doesn’t spoil and get wasted before it arrives in the restaurants or shops.
So we are glad to see how this year again industry leaders are coming together to raise awareness and show what type of sustainable cooling solutions are possible. By practically showing others in the industry, political leaders, and the consumer at home what is possible, new adaptions and legislation can be made for a greener future for the planet and the generations to come.
